Clover,
I’m confused about John Kettle and Metacomet which one won the war?
Who is King Philip?
Is this the right John Kettle? Our neighbor?
Some people say he and his sons were killed and his wife and daughters were taken hostage.
Are we safe?

Jasper,
I’m not sure we’ll have to do some more research
Maybe Rondo can sneak down and peek in The Library Window
Local History DiscussionWednesday 1:00 – 3:00
I heard that Mary Rowlandson was taken hostage by that King Philip character. Somebody paid those natives for her return and she wrote a book about it.
I bet she knows what’s what.
Think that they would give Rondo a library card? I wouldn’t, but for some reason humans like dogs.
Our farm used to be in Lancaster
That’s why the Kettles went to the Rowlandson Garrison House in Lancaster
No we didn’t move – This time the town lines moved
More specifically the residents living in what is now Bolton decided to leave Lancaster and form their own town
It was more complicated than you might think since the Proprietors of Lancaster still controlled the undistributed land that was now in Bolton.
Petrus,
Roger Breeze thinks you’re right about the path of the Nashaway Trail.
But he was confused about Kettle being on the Concord Road, do you still have that deed? You know the one from 1660 where he buys Lt Govenor Symmmonds 300 Acre Grant
I’ll look through Farmer’s papers for the Deed and the Map showing the Old and New Lancaster Roads
Roger wanted us to bring some stuff to the next history discussion – I think we should start with John Kettle the first Settler of Stow/Bolton
But we can not forget Doctress Mary. We might have to check to see If the Whitcombs were settled in Bolton before Kettle and before Philip. It is Genealogy Day this Wednesday at the Library
I just looked the Whitcomb Garrison is dated 1680
But there were supposed to be Garrisons in Bolton Territory in 1676
Either way Mary was neither a Whitcomb nor a Doctress in 1676
It was in her captivity in Canada until 1699 that she learned the healing ways of the natives.
She Married David Whitcomb in 1700 and they built on Old Sugar Road next to his parents place.
495 did not exists and the road went though toand up along Golden Run at the current corner of Sugar Road, where the Garrison House stood.
